The spirit of Christmas is alive and well in the close-knit Greenbank community of Covella by AVID Property Group (AVID) and Greenfields Development Company.

Covella residents had more reason to deck out their homes with Christmas lights this year after AVID made available more than $3,000 in prize money for the best decorated homes.

Covella resident Melissa Hayes won the Judge’s Choice Award for her dazzling home display which she’s been adding to every year since building and moving into the community in 2020.

Ms Hayes said she loved to light up her home, not only for the enjoyment of her family, but also to bring joy to her neighbours and the community.

“This year I have chosen to light up for the Children’s Hospital Foundation, an initiative the whole community can get behind just by scanning our QR code and making a direct donation to the Children’s Hospital,” she said.

“We have entered the Covella community competition every year since moving in and are always thinking of ways to improve and make it bigger and better.

“I love to light up my house – the excitement of children as they come up the driveway is so heart-warming and makes all the hard work worth it.

“It’s lovely to be a part of a community that spreads Christmas cheer and comes together to light up the streets.”

Families Magazine has listed Ms Hayes’ home as “something special” on their list of the best Christmas lights in and around Logan suburbs.

“We look forward to welcoming more families up to our display and sharing the spirit of Christmas this holiday season,” Ms Hayes said.

AVID General Manager Queensland Bruce Harper congratulated this year’s winners saying the Christmas lights displays were getting bigger and brighter every year at Covella – a growing residential community that will be home to 1,565 new homes when complete.

“Competitions like the Christmas lights display encourage residents to get involved in the life of their community. They also entice people out of their homes to walk their local streets and get to know their neighbours,’’ Mr Harper said.

“Creating connections and a sense of belonging is at the heart of community-making, which is central to AVID’s mission,’’ he said.

Winner of the Best Covella Residential Award Nicholas Wood said this year would be his family’s first Christmas in the community.

“My partner and I have always embraced the Christmas spirit from a young age and now having our first child is even more of a reason to get involved this year,” Mr Wood said.

“Our display is very unique as both the Santa sleigh, reindeers and post box are made by myself – I hope to bring Christmas joy to not only our families but everyone that lives within our community,” he said.

AVID awarded three main prizes in the 2022 Covella Christmas Lights Competition – Judge’s Choice Award, Best Covella Residential Award and Runner Up Award – as well as three Special Mentions.
