BMX riding in Beenleigh has never been brighter with the 2020/2021 Budget allocating funds for a lights upgrade at Doug Larsen Park.
Competitions and recreational riding under lights will soon be a possibility as $410,000 will go towards installing new lighting and upgrading existing lights at the Council-owned facility.
The new lighting will ensure the facility is suitable for night events, including the sport’s championships and qualifiers.
It will also add to the safety of the park which is hugely popular among the BMX and skate communities across South-East Queensland.
The project also includes $40,000 for street art to enhance the facility and to help discourage graffiti.
The $3.1 million redevelopment of the BMX freestyle and skate park facility was completed in January this year.
Cycling Australia immediately rated the venue as the best BMX freestyle facility in the country and has earmarked it to host future international competitions.
BMX freestyle was scheduled to make its Olympic debut at this year’s postponed Tokyo Games and is still on the program for the rescheduled event next year.
The design of the new freestyle course was finalised after Council hosted a workshop that included Logan’s BMX freestyle 2017 world champion Logan Martin along with Cycling Australia Technical Director (BMX) Wade Bootes, Clint Millar from Colony BMX and Ross Lavender and Nathan Philps from the local BMX community.
