City of Logan Mayor Darren Power has urged drivers to be more mindful of motorcyclists this Fatality Free Friday.
Fatality Free Friday (tomorrow, Friday, May 28) is a campaign that aims to go beyond preventing fatal crashes for one day but effect lasting change in driver attitudes.
Five people have lost their lives on City of Logan roads this year, four of them were motorcyclists.
“This tragic statistic is both sad and concerning,” Cr Power said.
“Sometimes an accident is the fault of a motorcyclist, sometimes it’s the driver of a car. Either way, it is something all road users should think about and change behaviours so this statistic does not grow.”
Infrastructure Committee Chair Councillor Teresa Lane said improved motorcycle awareness is needed.
“Motorcyclists have as much right to use the road as anyone but they can be harder to spot so check your side mirrors before changing lanes or merging,” Cr Lane said.
“Motorcyclists are the best judge of car driver behaviours and should be driving to road conditions. Taking unnecessary risks to get somewhere five minutes faster could cost you your life.”
Sixteen people were killed on Logan roads last year – triple 2019’s total of five.
Safer Roads for Logan held a ‘100 shoes’ display at Grand Plaza Shopping Centre yesterday to increase community awareness of Fatality Free Friday. The shoes signify the lives lost on our roads.
The Australian Road Safety Foundation is asking motorists to take the pledge to Choose Road Safety by promising to:
- Always be fit to drive
- Stay focused on the road
- Scan the road ahead
- Keep a safe distance
- Drive to suit the conditions
