New murals have been painted on the walls of the Jimboomba temporary pedestrian safety crossing below the Mount Lindesay Highway.

The works feature one of Jimboomba’s most iconic animals – the kangaroo – against a vibrant colour palette designed to brighten the underground space.

Division 9 Councillor Scott Bannan said Jimboomba’s newest marsupial images were already becoming “a bit of a tourist attraction” for the area.

“We want more people to know about (the walkway), it’s sort of a hidden secret,” Cr Bannan said.

Cr Bannan said the mural project would boost pedestrian traffic through the walkway, at minimal cost to ratepayers.

Logan City Council mural artists Jay Christensen and Paul Turnbull put the finishing touches on their latest masterpieces last week.

“The important part for me is that ratepayers aren’t happy with an artist from outside coming and charging a hundred thousand dollars to paint it,” Cr Bannan said.

“These guys work for Council, did a (great) job… and it was low cost, for a good benefit for everyone.”

The walkway remained open to pedestrians throughout the painting project, allowing local residents to see the ‘roos slowly come to life.

“The brief (was) to work with kangaroos, so we tried to do a modernised style,” Mr Christensen said.

“(We got) a lot of positive comments, which was appreciated.”

As part of Council’s City Standards team, Mr Christensen and Mr Turnbull have helped produce several other murals and public artworks around the City of Logan.

Some of their recent works include the new mural on the Logan Art Gallery, as well as the Anzac mural in Hillcrest.

The pair also helped the paint the Chester Park water tower in Boronia Heights, as designed by local artist Kyra Mancktelow.
