Logan City Council is again stepping up efforts to make backyard pools safer this summer.
Council is encouraging residents to become a ‘Logan Little Lives Saver’ by checking that their pool fence and gate complies with Queensland’s pool safety laws.
Planning Chair, Acting Mayor Jon Raven said the focus of this year’s Council’s Pool Safety Education campaign will focus on self-closing gates, adult supervision and learning CPR.
“We keep finding that although the pool fence may comply with the state legislation, it’s often the gate that is the cause of drowning incidents,” Cr Raven said.
“Pot plants, rocks, and wire tied on a fence are used by some pool owners to keep the gate open for ease of access, unaware that this action can endanger lives.”
Cr Raven said Council will continue to take an ‘outcomes based’ approach to rectifying issues.
“We’re not about wielding a fine book; we simply want to educate pool owners to help prevent a tragedy. Fines will only be used as a last resort.”
Logan City Council is responsible for pool fence compliance of all pools in the City of Logan.
All pools or spas must have a fence or barrier that complies with State laws, including some portable or inflatable pools.
Home fire safety will also be promoted with residents encouraged to request a QFES Safehome inspection, where a firefighter can visit a home and conduct a fire safety audit.
