During the Official Ceremony of the 2024 Buddha Birthday Festival, newly elected Mayor Jon Raven made a major announcement for the City of Logan. This was to recognise the annual Buddha Birthday Festival as the inaugural Signature Event of Logan.

The mayor acknowledged the work that the festival has achieved since 1991 in promoting the values of peace and harmony in the community and how the festival “promoted Logan for all the right reasons.”

The Buddha Birthday Festival, organised by the Fo Guang Shan Chung Tian Temple, Buddha’s Light International Association of Queensland, and the Chung Tian Chinese School, began with just 70 visitors who celebrated the event in a small house near the temple. In 1993 the festival moved to temple after completion of the first stage of construction.

Four years later following an invitation from the then Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Jim Soorley, the festival was held in the Cultural Forecourt in the South Bank Parklands. The half-day event attracted 5,000 visitors.

Over the next 22 years the festival became not only the longest running event in the Parklands but also the biggest. Eventually attracting 200,000 annual visitors and expanding into a three-day event with activities run throughout 14 locations within the South Bank precinct and on the Brisbane River.

When COVID struck, the Buddha Birthday Festival moved back to the temple. Running first as an online event, then as two COVID Safe Events.

Mayor Raven noted that last year over 37,000 people enjoyed their Buddha Birthday Festival experience. He further stated that “it makes sense that the biggest event on our cultural calendar is also one of the biggest events we host each year” and should be awarded such an honour.

In 2010 the Buddha Birthday Festival, when it was held in the South Bank Parklands was named as one of the Six Signature Events of Brisbane.

The Buddha Birthday Festival, now a Signature Event of Logan is a festival that is an accessible friendly, run as an accredited climate friendly event and is free to enter.
