The Outlander name has been with Mitsubishi for many years and from the humble first model that displayed an interesting and different look, the 2020 model is very much a refined version that exceeds expectations.
The Outlander Exceed incorporates the latest generation of Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system with active yaw technology, which offers a choice of advanced drive modes – AWC Eco, Normal, Snow and now Gravel.
This new technology really adds to the drive feel of the Outlander and whether it be on the open road, in the city or having some fun off the beaten track, this SUV can handle almost anything thrown its way.
The steering is light and the ride is smooth. The Exceed petrol is a 2.4-litre that produces 124kW and 220Nm of torque and it’s matched to a CVT with infinitely variable gear ratios that allows the engine to always operate at optimum RPM.
Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) works by sending torque to each rear wheel when needed and can also brake each rear as required, which gives better handling and stability on all surfaces.
Given its size, the Outlander is pretty good on the fuel. We got around 7.6L/100km during our week behind the wheel which is close enough to the claimed 7.2L/100km.
A new eight-inch infotainment system for the 2020 model includes a touchscreen monitor and the Exceed benefits from navigation technology. The owner can easily update the maps by downloading new files via USB and then uploading them directly into the SDA unit.
One of the Outlander’s better selling points is being able to fit seven seats into a medium SUV. The third row is better suited for occasional rides as it is a little tight but the second row really gets a decent amount of head and leg room. The front seats have also been revised to increase side support.
The Exceed is fitted with a 360-degree camera, and features blind spot warning, lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert. It also has a cool low-speed intervention feature which brakes the car automatically.
The Outlander is really beginning to look like it was designed in Europe and it looks great in front of the house and driving down the street.
With a smooth easy drive and plenty of room and comfort inside, this medium SUV is giving some of the larger players a run for their money.
