It’s rear-wheel drive, turbo, has two doors and is a coupe. This is one hell of a recipe made by two of the world’s best car manufactures, Toyota and BMW.

The top-spec 2020 Toyota GR Supra GTS is the fifth generation and is something that was really needed in the market. It has been 26 years from the launch of the fourth generation to the release of the fifth and the market was ready.

Toyota decided on two trim levels, GT and GTS, and one engine type for Australia. The GT starts from $84,900 plus on-road costs, while the GTS costs an extra $10,000 more, but brings with it a greater specification level.

The turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine produces 250kW of power and 500Nm of torque and it is fast. Using the inbuilt launch control program it’ll sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.3 seconds, which is partly thanks to the race-inspired Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyre as standard on 19-inch wheels.

Something that really is amazing is the lack of fuel usage. The engine has been designed to run on 91RON if the drive so chooses and has a combined consumption of only 7.7/100km. This goes right out the window when you begin to drive it like it should be driven but if you can control your right foot it really will do that low of consumption.

Standard features include adaptive LED headlights, heated and folding mirrors, automatic wipers, leather seats with eight-way power adjustment, an 8.8-inch infotainment system with smartphone mirroring, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, 12-speaker stereo with DAB+ digital radio, satellite navigation, a head-up-display and red brake calipers with larger rear brakes.

The Supra is low and you really need the full opening of the doors to get in and out but once you are in it is a wonderful place to be. There are body-hugging seats with electric side and back bolster adjustment and the feel is very sporty.

Toyota has used a cut down version of BMW’s 8.8-inch iDrive infotainment system making it easy to use and includes an intelligent voice recognition system to simplify command entry.

What the Supra really comes down to is how it drives and handles; after all this is to top of Toyota’s sport car list.

There are two modes – Normal and Sport – which can be selected at the simple press of a button. Normal is really meant for your everyday driving. You still have a lot of power on tap but the dampers take the harsh bumps of the road in a more gentle way.

Hitting the Sport button transforms the Supra into a firmer track weapon but it is still good for the rod, just a little harsher.

When you really start to get your spirited driving on the Supra doesn’t wriggle and the rear end is very controlled and doesn’t try to whip around the second you push the go fast pedal. It’s incredibly surprising how well it behaves when the fun heats up.

The steering has been given a good amount of thought as it comes with a very quick steering rack, which means only minor inputs are required to achieve an adequate amount of steering lock.

The B58 engine has been around in BMW since 2015, the constant improvements have given this power plant sharper throttle response and virtually lag-free turbocharger induction.

The engine works in sync with the eight-speed automatic gearbox and can handle the power and the high revs both up and down the box. Using the paddles gives a solid response and it holds gears when needed.

If you’re after a fun driving experience from two of the best manufactures in the world than this could be right up your alley. It is fast, it handles and looks great and you will defiantly get lots of looks when driving down the street.
