Another important milestone for the growing suburb of Yarrabilba was reached yesterday with the opening of the $1.5 million sports and community hub building at Shaw Street Oval.

The multi-purpose building was built under a funding arrangement between Logan City Council and Lendlease and a Queensland Government ‘Get Playing Plus’ grant.

City Lifestyle & Community Committee chair, Councillor Steve Swenson, said the collaborative approach to funding the project had delivered a knock out result for Yarrabilba residents.

“This is a great example of Council working with a developer like Lendlease and the Queensland Government to deliver for the community,” Cr Swenson said.

“The Yarrabilba Sport and Community Hub will meet the needs of the sports and community organisations within the area.”

Division 4 Councillor, Laurie Koranski said the building was perfect for Yarrabilba’s young and rapidly growing community.

“Like many residents here I have watched this project go from the drawing board to the finished building we see here now, and I’m thrilled with the result,” Cr Koranski said.

“Yarrabilba urgently needed a quality facility like this and both Council and Lendlease recognised it needed to be delivered sooner rather than later.

“Our community is growing fast with families and school-aged children, so I know this facility will get a lot of use from residents.”

Lendlease Communities managing director Matthew Wallace said the Yarrabilba Sport and Community Hub was an exciting addition to the community parks, gyms, swim school and sports fields already offered to locals and residents at Yarrabilba.

“Yarrabilba is designed to embrace open space and play facilities that celebrate inclusivity and encourage residents to enjoy an active lifestyle,” Mr Wallace said.

“The Yarrabilba Sport and Community Hub, along with Shaw Street Oval, help provide sports clubs and locals the opportunity to come together through sport.”

Logan City Council and Lendlease contributed $500,000 each to the project, with the remaining $500,000 secured through a Queensland Government Get Playing Plus grant.

Of Council’s contribution, $100,000 came from Cr Koranski’s divisional funding.

The hub’s features include change rooms, toilets, storage areas, canteen, multipurpose area, suitable for dance and flexible office spaces.
